Choosing between 210D and 420D fabric?

The main difference comes down to weight vs performance. The 210D saves around 400–500 grams, making it the better choice for backpacking and long carries where every gram counts. The 420D adds a little extra weight but delivers maximum stiffness increased tear resistance for heavy whitewater use.

  • 210D - Lightweight & Flexible

The 210D is lighter and packs smaller, making it the go-to for hikers and travellers who want to save weight on long carries. The 210D fabric is more supple, which makes it easier to roll and fold compactly. It also has a little more stretch in the nylon base fabric, which means the boat can flex slightly when impacted — helping reduce abrasion on the TPU coating.

    420D - Durable & Rigid

The 420D is slightly heavier but built from a much tougher fabric with roughly double the tear strength. It has minimal stretch, which makes the inflated boat more rigid — an advantage for technical whitewater paddling. Because the 420D fabric can be inflated firmer, its TPU coating can show more visible surface scratches, but the underlying fabric is far stronger and more resistant to long-term wear.

  • On average, the 210D saves around 400–500 grams depending on size. That’s roughly the weight of a water bottle — and for backpackers, it makes a noticeable difference.

  • Choose the 210D if you:

    • Want the lightest possible packraft (saves ~400–500g)

    • Need a compact roll-up size for backpacking or travel

    • Paddle mostly moderate rivers where ultimate durability isn’t critical

    Choose the 420D if you:

    • Paddle rocky or technical rivers regularly

    • Prioritise durability and stiffness over weight savings

    • Want a more rigid boat for advanced whitewater performance
